Nishio grows more matcha than anywhere else in Japan, and almost no foreign visitor knows it. Nagoya’s coffee shops handle the rest of the sugar.

FAQ
Good to know
よくある質問
- What sweets are essential in Nagoya?
- Ogura — sweet red bean. From ogura toast onward, this city puts anko at the centre. Uiro, a steamed rice-flour confection, is the other Nagoya classic, sold at the station and souvenir shops.
- What does uiro taste like?
- Steamed rice flour and sugar — chewy, only mildly sweet. It comes in plain, matcha, red bean and more, and most varieties do not keep long.
- Is this separate from kissaten sweets?
- They overlap. Ogura toast turns up in kissaten morning sets, so if it is early, look at the coffee shop listings too.
